Bologna city council (il comune di Bologna) has this year put up a different kind of Christmas tree in Piazza Nettuno. Known as the ‘eco-tree’ the lights are powered by dynamos connected to bicycles placed around the tree to produce the necessary electrical energy. Citizens and passers-by can take turns on the bicycles to produce power. Decorations are made of recycled plastic which will later be re-used to produce clothing.
Once Christmas is over the bicycles will be transferred to the Parco Cavaioni city park where they will have a similar use for producing night-time lighting. The tree itself will be used as firewood for the stoves in the park’s buildings.
The ‘eco-tree’ is said to be the first of its kind.
