Puglia chooses new leader

Voters in the southern region of Puglia voted in the U.S. primary-style elections this weekend to elect the candidate of the centre-left PD (Partito Democratico) in view of regional elections to take place in March. Nicky Vendola, formerly of Rifondazione Comunista, won over 70% of votes beating his adversary Francesco Boccia repeating the result of similar elections in 2005 when he went on to win the regional elections that year.
Often controversial in his views, and a declared homosexual, Vendola manages to win votes in a traditionally ‘conservative’ region thanks to his ‘clean’ and honest attitude and love of his home region as well as his battles against the mafia in the area especially in illegal construction work. In 2009 he founded Sinistra Ecologia e Libertà, a new party unifying left-wing views.
