Afghan Talebans have claimed responsibility for the attack on a logistics convoy early on Saturday in which 4 Italian soldiers were killed and another seriously injured.
The ambush took place in the Gulistan Valley in the western province of Farah as the troops and supplies convoy were returning from a mission. Defence Minister Ignazio La Russa reported that attacks had also been carried out the previous day without any serious consequences. The bodies of the four soldiers – Francesco Vannozzi, aged 26 from Pisa, Gianmarco Manca, 32, from Alghero, Sardinai, Sebastiano Ville, 27, form Siracusa, Sicily and the youngest Marco Pedone, 23, from Patù, in the Salento area of Puglia – will arrive in Italy tomorrow at Ciampino airport for the funerals.
These latest killings bring the total of Italian deaths in troops in Afghanistan to 34.
